About Barefoot Mission

What's in a Name?

"Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." Exodus 3:5

Here at Barefoot Mission, we believe in the power of standing barefoot in a place and recognizing where we stand as holy ground.

We are passionate about embedding ourselves in the community, embodying the role of good neighbors, and fighting for community reconciliation through every resource at our disposal. By committing ourselves to a ministry of presence, Barefoot Mission is dedicated to fostering sustainable, holistic change and community support in Wyandotte County.

Meet Jimmy and Taylor Penrod

Hi! We are the Penrods and we have decided to shape our lives from the prophetic writing of Isaiah 58 that says,

“If you get rid of unfair practices,
quit blaming victims,
quit gossiping about other people’s sins,
If you are generous with the hungry
and start giving yourselves to the down-and-out,
Your lives will begin to glow in the darkness,
your shadowed lives will be bathed in sunlight.
I will always show you where to go.
I’ll give you a full life in the emptiest of places—
firm muscles, strong bones.
You’ll be like a well-watered garden,
a gurgling spring that never runs dry.
You’ll use the old rubble of past lives to build anew,
rebuild the foundations from out of your past.
You’ll be known as those who can fix anything,
restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate,
make the community livable again."

If you knew us just several years ago, our lives looked very suburban and traditional. It was in these words from Isaiah  that our conviction came to sell our home in Johnson County and take up a new home in the heart of Wyandotte County. We are passionate about living fully present in our new space, to be the best neighbors we can be, to seek justice and mercy, and to use the resources we are given to fight for the reconciliation of the community.

A Policy of Open Hearts and Open Arms

At Barefoot Mission, our values are rooted in our faith, which calls us to serve others with love, compassion, and respect. Our doors and services are open to all, and we are dedicated to creating an environment where every person feels valued, seen, and heard. Regardless of your age, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or background, you have a place here.

Our Partners & Supporters

We wouldn’t be anywhere without our partners and supporters. Thanks to these companies, we are able to continue to expand and improve our efforts towards sustainable urban change and reconciliation.
